MJ Hegar became a commissioned officer in the Air Force after graduating from the University of Texas. She was selected for a highly competitive spot in the pilot training program, where she graduated at the top of her class. She went on to serve three tours in Afghanistan as a combat search and rescue and medevac pilot. During a rescue mission in Afghanistan, her helicopter was destroyed by the Taliban, and she was injured by enemy gunfire. She received the Purple Heart for her injuries, and she is one of only a few women to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor for her actions saving the lives of her crew and patients.
A native of Cedar Park, Hegar received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2010, Hegar relocated to Austin and worked as a program manager a Seton Healthcare Family until 2015. From 2015 to 2017, she worked as a consultant at Dell Computers Hegar has taught at the UT-Austin McCombs School of Business and in the ROTC and women's studies departments.

Julie Oliver ran against the incumbent, Roger Williams, in 2018. She has served as St. David’s HealthCare’s financial division controller for the seven-hospital healthcare system, across 110 locations in Central Texas. She also is a member of the Central Health Board of Directors, appointed by the Austin City Council. She has had 20 years of experience in healthcare finance and taxation. Previously, she worked as a partner at Patterson & Davies LLP in Austin where she provided planning, transactional advice and controversy assistance in federal, state and local taxation business start-ups as well as government relations. She began her career as a tax consultant at Ernst & Young in Austin where St. David’s Foundation was her client.
She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting from The University of Texas at Arlington. She went on to complete her law degree at The University of Texas at Austin and is licensed by the State Bar of Texas.
